God Doesn’t Like Sweets

Thinking back on all the years of Lent, I have given up the same exact thing every single year.  Pop.  Or as some of you may know it, soda.  But giving up pop didn’t make me appreciate God more, it made me appreciate pop more.  And even worse was that as soon as Lent was over, I would indulge in pop more than I normally would, and that was encouraged.  Now that I am older and hopefully a little bit wiser, I can appreciate what the Lenten season tries to accomplish.  It is more about self-control and learning to live without the non-essentials.  Giving up what’s harmful to us and better ourselves as a people.  But every Easter I see people spoil themselves with alcohol and candy thinking they just survived the Holocaust.  Maybe instead of giving up pop and candy, we should give up hypocrisy.

Gay Marriage

So there has been a lot of controversy lately about allowing same sex marriage in Illinois.  Chicago itself is a pretty liberal city with the majority of the people being fairly open-minded, but every so often you find someone that doesn’t agree.  I am all for free speech and I think everyone’s thoughts deserve to be heard, regardless of how ridiculous they are.  The one thing that confuses me is that the ones against same sex marriage are usually religious people.  Being raised Catholic, I was told to not to judge people.  The goal in life is to be as much like Jesus as possible.  Jesus never promoted hate or discriminated against anyone.  It’s funny how things change.  What would Jesus do?  Not hate, that’s what.
